How the score works

The score is out of 10 and compares UVA with every school we rank in neuroscience. It weighs research spending in the field (40%, NSF), the student body's test scores (30%), what graduates earn four years out against the same major nationally (15%, kept low because many go on to PhD or medical school, which early pay misses), how many undergraduate courses the department lists, where counted (10%), and the number of graduates in the major (5%, capped; leading departments are often small). Pay is compared after a half adjustment for state price levels (BEA), since many graduates move. A program needs at least 15 graduates a year (or 8, with research spending in the field in the top quarter) and data about the program itself (its own graduates' pay, its course catalog or research in the field) to be ranked; school-wide numbers alone never rank a program. Missing inputs drop out and the rest are reweighted. Scores run 0–10 against the other ranked schools: 8.0+ is a standout program, 6.5+ strong, 4.5+ solid. Schools with the same score share a rank.
