How the score works

The score is out of 10 and compares Nebraska Omaha with every school we rank in engineering. It weighs what graduates earn four years out against the same major nationally (25%), research spending in the field (20%, NSF), how many undergraduate courses the department lists, where we've counted them (20%), the student body's test scores (20%) and the number of graduates in the major (15%, capped so size alone can't win). Pay is compared after a half adjustment for state price levels (BEA), since many graduates move. A program needs at least 15 graduates a year (or 8, with research spending in the field in the top quarter) and data about the program itself (its own graduates' pay, its course catalog or research in the field) to be ranked; school-wide numbers alone never rank a program. Missing inputs drop out and the rest are reweighted. Scores run 0–10 against the other ranked schools: 8.0+ is a standout program, 6.5+ strong, 4.5+ solid. Schools with the same score share a rank.
