How the score works

The score is out of 10 and compares University of California, Santa Cruz with every school we rank in communications & media. It weighs what graduates earn four years out against the same major nationally (35%), the number of graduates in the major (25%, capped), courses the department lists, where counted (20%), the student body's test scores (15%) and research spending in the field (5%). Pay is compared after a half adjustment for state price levels (BEA), since many graduates move. A program needs at least 15 graduates a year (or 8, with research spending in the field in the top quarter) and data about the program itself (its own graduates' pay, its course catalog or research in the field) to be ranked; school-wide numbers alone never rank a program. Missing inputs drop out and the rest are reweighted. Scores run 0–10 against the other ranked schools: 8.0+ is a standout program, 6.5+ strong, 4.5+ solid. Schools with the same score share a rank.
